AGP #Slides - 18 Dec 2018

Finally found a way to successfully cut Glass Slides with a minimal rate of breakage, 6 out of 6 on this lot, clamped my Dremel fitted with a Diamond cutting wheel to a work bench and slowly rotated the bottle on the disc, not the fastest way to cut Slides but the most successful I’ve found so far, time taken of course depends on the type of glass and the thickness, these ones measure from 2mm to 5mm thick, and the lengths vary from 42mm to 62mm.While I have access to a good supply of different Wine Bottles etc., from the workplace of my son, a Chef, it’s very hard to find a bottle neck these days with long straight sides and of a decent thickness, haven’t tried yet, but I’m sure the process could be sped up a bit by scoring with the Dremel and then applying the heat then cold water method, but have found by cutting almost all the way through, it does mean a lot less smoothing of the cut edges, which I do with a small sanding flap wheel attached to my Drill Press (as pictured). If there’s any advice I could offer on this method, it would be, to treat it like the “Lady Love” in your life, take your time! - be very gentle! and above all “Be Very Very Patient”:-)

  • "Thanks Randy", a much appreciated tip coming from the "Master Slide Maker", I did think about using water, and will do so next time, I have also had some success using a larger Diamond Blade Tile Cutting Table Saw, left over from my former life in the building trade, but found it spins a bit fast and is a bit brutal, where as you can turn down the speed on the Dremel  :-)

  • Thanks Denbo, and yes, I have used that method, but with limited success  :-(

  • "Thanks Dave", some have suggested that I'm a "Simple Man"  :-D

  • I have been using those diamond disc`s for years to cut bone. I recently used one to cut a piece of Jade..found out the disc cuts a lot better when sprayed with water as your making the cut.

  • Thanks for showing AGP. Nice simple rig.
