AGP #312 - “Dıngılday - Дынгылдай”

AGP #312 - “Dıngılday - Дынгылдай”(3 String Tuvan Doshpuluur)Scale : 616mm / 24¼inchesStrings : .030Silver Wound Nylon/.040-Nylon/.032-Nylon/Came across this great sounding little instrument called a “Doshpuluur” while watching a documentary on the “Idiot Box” about the “Tuvan People’s Republic” which is on the Mongolian border in Russia somewhere, So!, of course I had to build one!, from what I could find out on “Mr Google”, they have a scale length of around 24¼inches,are strung with Nylon Strings & Tuned CGc, and that they are built primarily from Pine with either a Top & Bottom of Goat Skin or thin Pine. This one is obviously all Pine, the 10mm Box Sides & Neck are Spruce Pine sourced from my trusty old recycled Piano, the Top and Bottom are 3mm Radiata Pine Ply, the Fretboard and Nut are an unknown white dumpster find timber and the Bridge is Cypress Pine, screwed the top on instead of gluing to give me the option of changing to a Hide Top, which might happen in the near future, as it’s doesn’t quite have the sound & volume I was expecting, used the B G D strings from a set of Normal Tension Classical Guitar Strings and tuned it CGc, which was very sloppy with little Volume, have been gradually tuning it higher which creates more volume as you go up, and am currently at GDg but not sure if I’m game to take it any further, maybe heavier strings might help, but! knowing virtually nothing about Nylon Strings, I am open for any suggestions or help from the wealth of information that the members of the Cigar Box Nation possess. It’s was quite an expensive build costing around 18,074 Mongolian tögrög, which equates to abt 422 Russian Rubles, $9.58 Australian, $7.55 USD :-D

  • PS: And your dead right StorminSteve, too many people underrate the use of the humble 3mm Pine Ply, I have used it on quite a few builds over the years with great success, and it has a lot of good things going for it besides the sound quality, it's cheap, it's easy to work with and can have some great woodgrain patterns, have also used 3mm Luan Ply in the past, which is a bit darker timber, with really good woodgrain patterns :-)

But sadly I'm having a bit of a problem sourcing it locally at the moment  :-[

  • "Thanks" Erasmo and StorminSteve for looking, and the advice, I have made the decision to turn AGP #312 - “Dıngılday - Дынгылдай”  into a lightly strung Steel String CBG type build with a Mag Pup, and to build another Doshpuluur using the same design and principles, BUT!, this time with a (Kangaroo) Skin Top and Bottom   :-)
