AGP #227 - ''Pinetop''

AGP #227 - “Pinetop’’(5 String Wood Top Block Rim Banjo)Scale: 685.8mm / 27 inchesStrings : .010 / .023/ .016 / .012 / .010 /Tuning: gDGBDThe outer ring size is 320mm/12⅝inch, the ring timber is off cuts of Poplar & Red Oak, the sound board is 3mm/⅛inch Premium Grade Radiata (Monterey) Pine Plywood, Ebony (Piano Key) Nut & Bridge, the Neck is of an unknown recycled (free!) hardwood, the Neck Dowel, String Tailpiece and Fret Board are Merbau (Intsia bijuga), all timber has been finished with a Furniture Restoring Wax.The Machine Heads are one of two sets I got on Ebay from China a couple of years ago, which included one of those “Pain in the Butt” Fifth String Tuning Pegs, which I used, but wish I didn’t!!, the side fret markers (cut down pop rivet heads) do not conform with the modern day style of marking the 10th fret instead of the 12th, but to save me confusing myself, (which isn’t hard to do) I stayed with Guitar Style.“Thanks” to Jim Morris for his recent posting of a great looking and sounding Block Rim Build, which was my inspiration to do this one, and! I’m glad I did, (“and there will be more”) because I love the sound of it, this is the first build I think I’ve ever done without a Pickup of some sort being installed, the only thing left to do now, is do it some justice, and learn how to play it properly, had a go at trying to learn a bit of Claw Hammer Style, but!, after the last few years of Finger Picking CBG’s, the right hand fingers just can’t find reverse, so!, finger pickin' it will be, at the moment starting at the beginning, trying to get a “Forward Backward Roll” under my fingers.

  • "Thanks" gary Sheldon for the kind comment!

  • Very nice

  • Thanks for the link AGP , and the encouragement :-)

  • "Yep" lots of action there Dave, It was a No:1 Hit Down Under for this Aussie Band in 2004, Leadbelly was probably turning in his grave!!.

The Roo Skin has been sitting in the corner for a couple of years, I better check to make sure it hasn't hopped away!, the "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" man, has been very naughty!, and is currently doing time in the UK.

  • "Thanks" Uncle John, have already checked out Utube for a few Claw Hammer Lessons, tried with not much success, even finding the Finger Pickin' Style slow at the moment, but as you say it's all about forcing yourself to practice! practice! practice!

  • Better tie your kangaroo down to skinum... Mate.
  • Quite the action video there AGP! Glad we don't have to make our videos like that. Buggy could do it though...
  • "Thanks" Bristol Blue, I think the Banjo Style to go with, would be the one that suits you personally, and there is nothing wrong with playing slide on a Banjo, eg: the accompanying Utube link, where the one of the main riffs is played on what looks like a Banjo Mandolin.

  • "Thanks" David Bowes, the comment by Dave Lynas below yours, explains the tapered neck question.

  • "Thanks Dave", the next build of this type will be smaller, and probably a Kangaroo Skin Tack Head, with different timbers (more than likely from my trusty recycled Piano supply), definitely a different 5th string Peg (Guitar Machine Head), and a bit more angle from Bridge to String Tailpiece.
