Rub N BUff is a wax based antiquing "paint".That handle that was bright, glossy lacqured bushed nickel finish, I just used some 100 grit sandpaper to break the gloss and add some scratches to the finish. Then using fingertip and very small amount of the gold finish just kind of drag it across the surface. Then I went over that sort of at random with black. Let is dry for a bit then just buff slightly with a paper towel. I rubbed enough in some spots to get back to the original silver finish, so it ends up looking like maybe it was chrome plated but rubbed and rusted off. I plan on spraying the whole build with matte finish too . I read mixed ideas about applying finish over the rub nbuff. Some say don't, it will flake, some say do or it will rub off with handling. I will see. It is wax based so it does seem to soften and rub off with handling. If you are interested, there are utube videos about using it, search for something like "steampunk finish using rub n buff"
