I mixed up some Leaf Green and Tuscan Red acrylic paint, and diluted it with water to make Muddy Brown stain/primer. Not sure if I should give it another coat or not, but it sure looks better after it dried. I'm thinking I'll spray varnish everything when I'm done

Took your advice and did another coat of stain on her today George- good job I did, there was quite a bit of white I missed! Looks pretty rustic now! Posted a couple more pictures...hope you can see the difference
Yup. I'd give it another coat. You've got a lot of surface there. A varnish finish will show the 'thin' spots in your stain where the wood grain is either softer or harder than the surrounding wood. Looks great. I really like that book-matching you've got happening.
