I don't want the through-the-box neck to be too heavy or too much in contact with the lid, so I've cut out the middle of it, leaving edges which will reinforce and support the lid, while still letting it vibrate. The fretboard fret positions are marked out while I still have 90 degrees on the edge. Once I cut the tapered fretboard, getting the fret positions at 90 degrees would be much harder.
