Yep, emando builders go to great lengths to stop the flop, such as modified headstocks and string trees. I find just using heavier strings fixes it on most occasions. Even on my cigar box builds, I often find a string that just sounds "off" is quickly fixed by using a heavier string, for more tension.
This customer wants the standard 5 string electric setup, with that lowest tuned string in C... so CGDAE. The biggest complaint with 5 string mandos is the floppyness of that string, but I think I found the way around that on the first one.
I keep the first one in EAEAE for some great droney stuff. What can I say, I'm a sucker for sawmill tunings and drones. It was dulcimers that got me into this string thing, after all!
