the maple is so light colored that it would get dirty from playing very easily, I found out the hard way ! so I cleaned it up and had to spray varithane it I gave it 3 coats, I hope that's enough, that's why It looks so shinny. Fender uses maple, I use birds eye maple, I one upped em !
