4- Three inline style. Top correct Bottom flipped note string tension on geared shaft tends to pull the gears tighter. No slipping this way even with cheap tuners.

Thanks for that tip, Bill. I just put some cheap tuners from an old guitar on a build I was doing, and I couldn't get the bottom string above a dull-sounding D# without it slipping out. I ended up buying a set of new tuners to fix it. Now, thanks to your idea, I can put those old tuners back to work on another build!
