I agree completely Dave. I built just the one git with a pre-amp fitted in the box, and it's a hassle. As you say, whether it's an actual cigar box or your own hollow-body, it looks cumbersome and out of place. The more I look at this- and handle it- the more I like it. What else can I build now?
The SS Pre-amp Hack in a sturdy case. I really enjoyed making the box- I've just given up drinking and it's left me a whole bunch of time in the evenings I never knew I had- and I think it's come out well. I regretted the wax for about ten seconds, but once I'd added the cast-iron handle I was glad I'd gone for it. Needless to say, it works just fine, and I'm gonna struggle to fight the temptation to build several more. How many does a chap truly need?

I like this a lot. I don’t like these preamps in a guitar. They look out of place on a cigar box relic but great in your external cab. Beautiful.
