  I forgot to mention that sometimes I use food coloring to get a see thru shade look to a neck.but then do the sealer over that to seal it in.

  Michael,
  I cheat all over the place on finishes.
  I sand down and then put a coat of poly on the necks or boxes,knock the rough grain back down and then just add whatever paint in what ever color I decide on and let dry.I then go back and add another coat of clear poly on top of that for the gloss.
  A lot dont use poly but it works for me.
  The colors are just regular spray paint you can buy about anywhere.
