I got a pre-amp from cb gitty but was not happy with the curved plastic faceplate. I removed it and cut off the battery compartment and used the faceplate as a template to layout and carve the side of my box. MUCH better.

I used a 3/16" forstener bit in my drill press to remove most of the material for the slots and an x-acto knife & 1/4" chisel to clean them up. A router would have been risky without a proper router template and guide bushing (very difficult to make for such small features). the other holes were fairly easy using calipers and various drill bits to get the sizes just right. it took awhile, but was worth it, I think.
Well done!!! I've been thinking about doing something like this for a long time! Never thought of using the face as a template! Did you use a router bit?
