10$ amp joins Smokin' Rooster Studios

This AGA 30R had been sitting idle in a customers office for years. Clean & gain channels,10" speaker, 30 watts, plus reverb, sounds pretty good. Flanked by Delta King with a Jimmy Page mod, Liberty 4 string aka Testa Rossa, and hacked 1940 Silvertone radio,10" speaker 6 watts.

  • Thanks Blind, very interesting. Like that neck too. We'll see, i'm lusting for a Fender Champ. I'll be shopping.
  • Hey Dave, I just saw this on ebay & thought of you & your empty 3 pup axe, maybe this can work for you.

  • Robert, Oily, i think you are correct. I've heard too many guitars screaming fits. I like smoothies too. Give me a mello old slide down music lane....
  • Over compression plays a role in the perceived harshness also.

It destroys the nuances in music making it all seem louder at the expense of tonal variation.

  • It's because you've been listening to recordings of those old pups for the last 50-60 years. Your ears have become accustomed to that tone, and in the meantime, the older you get, the more your high end hearing degrades, due to noise pollution / overexposure. So as we age, our ears like more warm middle tones, which is what those pups tended to deliver. Plus, the amps they were cranking through 60 years ago tended to max out at around 20-30 watts. Couple that with relatively primitive sound recording and reproduction equipment, and the new stuff sounds a tad harsh...because yer not used to hearing all that high end detail, and because of waveform digitization.
  • Why is it that the first pickups made have the best tone? Why are the more modern humbuckers and special effects pups less? Kind of makes an old guy like me feel good....
  • Ya Dave, I like the sunburst demon with 3 speed bumps. I also have a Silvertone BobKat red burst with red foil diamond pups, great tone, different from the gold foils. Something about those old pups, once you play them your hooked!

  • Lemon, I've got 3 Demons. Two red ones with the wild headstock. One has the original pickup and the other i modified with a Gretsch lap steel pick up. The other is tobacco burst with a speed bump. My favorite to play of all my guitars is the tobacco Demon. I've made pick guards out of Rosewood and Curly Maple for the Demons. I've got one Bobkat with an S type gold foil. It sounds great, kind of raw and fresh.
  • Would love to get a Kay Speed Demon, lost one on ebay a while back. I have a Bobkat with 'S" type gold foils, real gritty, love them!

  • You have a good dump Mr. Cello. That's a beauty. Nice luck on the mustache. I've got several slim line hollow body husks waiting my attention. Rockets, Speed Demons mostly. Some are 3 pickup monsters. Finding 3 vintage pickups has stopped me so far. I might mix match a mod with gold foils. I have several of those nice babys. I've put together three single pickup Speed Demons and one Rocket which turned out great and sound wonderful.
