AGP #414 - ''WOP Piano

AGP #414 - “WOP Piano” - 3 String Fretless Guitar”Scale: 654mm/25¾ inches. Strings: .044NW/.030NW/.020NW/ Tuned: GDgA recent sighting of the Gitty Canned Heat, AKA Tin in a Box, brought back memories of our Canadian Mate, Erasmo, the “Fastest Tin in a Box Picker” in the West, also reminded me, that I did have a similar Gitty Type 1 litre Tin, sitting on a shelf, originally earmarked to be a 1 String Diddley Bow.As the name suggests, the Tin held a ‘Wipe On Poly”, and all the Timber came from bits and pieces of my ever Faithfull old recycled Piano from many years back. The 19mm thick Box sides (I think?) are European Spruce Pine, as is the 7mm thick Top, Bottom and Fretboard, which were from the Piano’s Soundboard, although having a reasonable Acoustic Volume un-amped, a 3.5k Ebay, Prewired Single Coil Pickup with Vol, Tone & Output Jack provides the extra noise, if so desired, but it does seem to prefer the Cleaner Side of Life, so you probably won’t see any “Hats on Backwards” performances with this Build, a Sound Sample will follow soon! :-D

  • "Thanks BQ", Wipe On Ply is one of about 6 different finishes I use. :-)

  • Kool, I love wipe-on poly!!!

  • Doug Thorsvik, Of course the "Tin in a Box" can also be reversed to a "Box in a Tin" with quite good results!,   :-D

  • AGP, The tin in box is a great idea too!!! It opens up the possibility of using smaller containers in the building of guitars! Thanks for sharing.

  • "Thanks Doug", Nearly all my builds feature my preferred use of materials, which is of course, recycled & free, this started very early in my building days, mainly caused by the fact, that decent sized Cigar Box's in the Land Down Under, are hard to find, and when they do become available, are far to costly, I did do one other Tin in a Box build last year, inspired by the above mentioned Canadian Erasmo Coco, you won't regret building one, as they do offer up a bit of a different sound, and if your like me, it's all about looking for different build ideas! :-)

  • Now I’ll have to consider a “DO Bookshelf” guitar! I have several Danish Oil cans about the same size and some wood from my late mother-in-laws bookshelf. I love the recycling idea and your authentic can looks sharp. Well done!

  • "Thanks Bob"  :-)

  • Excellent use of materials for this build AGP! Great detailing and finish.

  • "Thanks UJ and Keith", Yep!, since purchasing this Can of Poly I've always liked the look of it, and no Keith, it didn't have a pour spout as such, and was a bit messy to pour out and wipe on, so very early in the piece, I transferred the contents into a plastic bottle, and the Can has sat on the shelf until now, not noticeable in the Pics, but it does have a little spillage remnants on the Can itself, and I think I forgot to mention it in the notes, but the Timbers are course coated with the original Wipe on Poly contents!  :-)

  • Oh I really like this build. Does it have a pour spout? Gitty has three sizes of these cans now. They put one in a box, using thin boards to suspend it, and it sounds really good. Can't remember if it also has a piezo in it. But this one rocks too!
