  Hello!
  I have used whatever small magnets I have found. Some are for my chidren's old toys :D Yes I have made several pickups using coil wire, magnets and some plastic or pieces of old circuit boards. They all work tremendously well. Just yesterday I recorded some electric dulcimer parts to one song which will end up on my friend's cd. Awesome raw sound you wouldn't get from normal electric guitar.
