Thank you for that Mike, I think my jack must be a little different, it has a red and white wire already soldered on and a woven sheathing. I have soldered the red wire to the middle peg on the volume pot and the white wire to the ground, the sheathing I have just cut off. I have tried plugging in the jack and it has a lot of hum that increases in volume if I touch the pots. Maybe if I ground the sheathed wire to the top of the volume pot it would work, as you have probably guessed I am clueless when it comes to the electrics. Here is a picture of the set up, if you can spot what is wrong please let me know what you think mate.

Yes it is an inverted dog bowl and I did make the neck from recycled mahogany that was an old stair rail
