Removing smoke smell from boxes?

I picked up a few great boxes at my local flea market, and one of them has this nasty smoke smell to it. It's not too noticeable, but I'd like to get rid of it. Does anybody have any tips for removing the smell from the wood?

Cookie tin lid for banjo?

Has anyone tried using a cookie tin lid rather than a paint can lid on a banjo type CBG? I know paint lids are easier, but has anyone gotten any good results using a cookie lid?
