I picked up a few great boxes at my local flea market, and one of them has this nasty smoke smell to it. It's not too noticeable, but I'd like to get rid of it. Does anybody have any tips for removing the smell from the wood?

I use Wood bleach to lighten and remove stuff. It would work and you have great recommendations below
Do be aware that vinegar will affect the longevity of the paper labels as it's acidic.
Thanks, that's really good to know.
You could try my skunk removal recipe. The solution oxidizes pretty much anything.
1/3 cup dish soap
1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide (the regular first aid one)
1/3 cup baking soda.
Mix so it's the consistency of pancake batter. Apply, wait a bit then rinse.
But if you want to go an easier route, you can apply some shellac to the box. The real thing seals in odors pretty good.
Wipe with vinegar first let it completely dry in the sun then try ammonia, do the job "out side"!
