Hi all,

Well ive nearly finished my new project CBG but i fancy doing something a little differ

regarding the strings so any help would be really grateful..........

The idea-:

To use the G string off a bass guitar(the thinist one)

and then use E/A/D of a standard guitar (10s)

I dont know if this has been done before (i guess it has)

So what do you all thing the pros n cons could be ???

what problems could i encounter??

any help would be great,

cheers Mark

  • Ok well ive got the strings for my project BUT !!!!!
The "G" Bass string looks the same thickness as The "E" string on standard guitar.
What do you guys think ?? should i go up another Bass string size ??????
  • cheers for that david, Cigar Box Basitar now that sounds cool !!

    Sounds an interesting idea Mark,

I found this link about Basitar & Guitbass http://www.inthequeue.com/guitbass/ so at least you know it can be done on a 6 string guitar ;O)

  • Thanks Yellowbelly,
The idea is a kinda cross over bass/lead style,
Im not sure what tuning i`ll use,but the Baritone tuning sounds about right
and regards to machine heads i`ll be using
    one off a bass guitar.
by my reconing using the bass G string with the E string should give the guitar a warmer deeper sound for the blues
and using the A/D for fills etc.
Its only an idea at the moment and i kind never do the norm (haha)
    cheers again for the info

  • The first thing I would like to know is why would you want to do this? What tuning are you going to use in order to play the finished instrument? Will it be a bass type instrument, a rhythm instrument or a lead instrument?

To keep the relationship of a bass instrument the tuning would be G, C, F and Bb.
    Baritone tuning (Chicago tuning) would be G, D, B, E. For slide in spanish? G,D,B and D-key of D or Vestapol in G would be G D B G. Ukulele tuning perhaps, G C E A. Mandolin tuning? G D A E.

The problems that I can envisage is the length of the bass string will make it difficult to fit. Even with a long scale standard guitar neck, the string leader will be well used up and you will need to have the playing part of the string passing through the tuner/machine head. Will the scale of you instrument allow you to tune it to the note you need?
I think that a bass G string will pass through a six string machine head.

The neck,I think, and the machine head fitment will need to be stronger than a standard neck as even one bass string will impose itself on the neck/body/string holders.

Best of luck with this very interesting project that I look foreward to following on the nation.
