Hi Mal,
How much of it do you want to do yourself?
Maplin sells kits with a few bits you solder onto the printed circuit board such as these

http://www.maplin.co.uk/1w-amplifier-kit-220054
http://www.maplin.co.uk/7w-mono-audio-amplifier-module-32209
or if you want the easiest method this module just needs the wires attached
http://www.maplin.co.uk/3.5w-universal-amplifier-module-37734
Or if you want to do more yourself the little gem or ruby amps off run of the groove are a nice little project

http://www.runoffgroove.com/ruby.html
and the most basic of mini amps is the smokey amp http://www.dirtbox.net/diy/projects/1235/smokey-amp/
to buy your own parts I find bitsbox the best for value and service http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/ and they do a little LM386 kit http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/kits/projectkits.html
For speakers you can give the ones you have ago as they are easy to swap later if they sound poor.

David
