My first CBG, trial and error.

Just built my first CBG. Had a bit of an issue in cutting the neck too thin, which meant that i couldn't tighten the tuning pegs up ... an easy mistake to make.

Not wanting to spend money when i didnt have too, i reduced the total neck length to 27" and started again. This time taking care with sanding to get the right thickness.

It's a 2 string, and I've strung it up with D and G strings and it doesn't sound too bad, however it definetly needs a slide as the way i've built it i've found the strings to be quite tight, so not really enough slack to press down easily.

Is there a recommended neck length to have ?

I'll post some pics tomorrow and welcome any feedback, good or bad, as it all helps when it comes to build no. 2.

A real cheap and easy slide is to cut off a piece of copper pipe, around 2 to 2 1/2 inches long.  An even easier option  is to use an old socket piece, any size you can fit your finger in.  Job done.

For necks, the main thing to remember is the longer the neck is, the more it'll flex and bend once it's under pressure.  Also a longer neck'll give a slighter deeper note, and vice versa for a shorter neck (generally speaking).

I started with a 3 foot neck, with about 6 inches for the headstock, and an inch and a half poking out the back.  From the nut to the bridge is 25 1/2 inches, and the neck hardly flexes at all. Oh, and use a dense piece of hard wood if you can.
