playing a CBG

i know there are no rules when it comes to playing a cgb (or any other guitar for that matter). Generally speaking though...tuning a 4 string cgb in other than an open tuning. Are there popular tunings? Baritone uke tuning dgbe comes to mind. Tension on the neck i guess would be a major concern as well. can anyone point me in a reasonable direction?

  • I dig so-called modal tunings, like GDGD or EAEA
  • Yeah something like a mandolin tuning could be good. You could tune it like a tenor banjo or tenor guitar. Tenor banjo strings are pretty light I think, so there would be minimal tension on the neck. The chords are the same shape as a mandolin.
  • You might want to try mandolin/violin standard tuning: low to high G, D, A, E (perhaps an octave lower if necessary). Tenor mandola tuning is C, G, D, A (this may work better if you use medium or heavy guage strings. Mandolin tuning would open the door to a lot of bluegrass and folk tunes.
