Reentrant tuning gCEA

Hi guys I'm planning a four string build (actually several), and wanted to tune one to standard reentrant ukulele tuning, as I already play the uke, so would be able to play the CBG instantly! Can anyone tell me first, if this is possible, and second, which strings would I use from a guitar? Cheers Darren

  • I have been thinking the same thing Darren... how has it worked for you? Makes perfect sense to do this since there is a ton of ukulele tab, song charts, etc. out there. The lower tone should sound good too. String selection would be an important part to work out.

  • Actually, now that I think about it, the DGBE on a standard guitar, when capoed on the 5th fret gives you GCEA, so if I swapped out the D for the high E, and tuned that to d, it should give me dGBE. I don't really care if its not gCEA, just tuned so the ukulele chord shapes would be the same fingerings, so I don't have to relearn new chords (I'm lazy!).

I realise that when I'm playing a chord, it won't be the correct name (ie: the G on a uke is the same fingering as a D on the guitar) and my brain will be telling myself G when a tuner will be saying D. I don't play in a band, so don't need to be in tune with anyone else but me.

Does any of this make sense?

    Cheers
    Darren.
    • Makes perfect sense. I play uke too, but use ADF#B tuning...and use that tuning for my 4 string cbgs.
