Wooden liners?

I initially felt sure the extra wood that lines some of the boxes should be pulled out and eliminated,  but I wonder what most of you guys do with it,  seems if it was glued in place that it wouldn't affect the sound that much either way, and would add weight and stability......what should I do???

  • those liners can be helpful on some box styles. for example, the Padron boxes have lids with sides, rather than just a flat panel. many vintage boxes are constructed like this, too. for this type of box, I glue the liners in place and screw the lid to them through the side panels. much easier than trying to drill and screw down through the lid. And Michael is right about scraps; toss 'em in a box with other various bits and pieces. they may come in handy someday when you're working through a construction/design problem.
  • that's it.....on the advice of two good builders I will be pulling the liners out......and never throw anything away anymore....thanks Michael!!!

I pull the liners out, the box's are strong and those liners are only there to help seal the box and protect the cigars, not really for support or they would be glued in. They are usually nice pieces of wood and I use them to make piezo/bridges. Don't throw anything away, you never know when it will fit on a cbg.

  • thats good advice.....thanks Sam! Your builds look great!!

The only time I keep the wood liners is when I am dealing with a very fragile (usually vintage) box. Most modern boxes are plenty strong enough for stand up to typical building techniques.

hope that helps, it's a perspective from building 240+ CBGs.... only kept the liners in about 3 or 4 of those builds...
