i'm about to start on my first cigar box guitar with a paper covered wood box. any tips on how to not make an awful, awful mess out of the paper covering?

i just feel like the moment i start drilling a soundhole or cutting the slot in the sides for the neck, the paper is going to rip. i don't mind losing some of the design, i just don't want an excessively messy edge.
If you really like the paper art, build on the bottom. If you don't mind a little stuff in the way build on the top. Really, a small sound hole and the bridge won't "mess up" the top too much...
