  • Shellac is another good finishing too....It a good sealer or basic coat....It also can be use as a finally finish on the cigar box too...

  • Does anyone put a finish on paper covered boxes? I was thinking of spraying lacquer but I'm a little unsure how that will work on paper.

    • Lacquer can go on about anything.....It depend if you spraying a wooden  or cardboard cigar box ..Test it on a old cigar box 1st..I would use the can spraying lacquer and buy the Good Stuff....You will have less problems....

    • I already have spray lacquer and unfortunately I don't have any old boxes. The boxes I have are "cardboard" although they actually have a 1/8" wood core covered with layers of paper. My fear is the paper may delaminate from the solvents in the lacquer. But if I don't protect the face, I'm worried the paper will get scuffed and torn.

    • If you are useing cardboard box...reglue any lose paper on it....spray light coat....lacquer doesnt build coat like poly's....Be careful if you use acrylic lacquer...It isnt flexible enough for wood movement will cause tiny cracks in the finish...

  • I use and like Tru - oil .It is a gun stock finish. The coats are dry in 2 hours so a good smoothly sanded neck ,with a few coats of the Tru - oil . So no waiting til the next day to put it all together.
  • I have used a beeswax waterproofing called Sno-Seal from  http://www.atsko.com/  and like the finish it gives the wood. Rub it in, let it sit and soak in for a while and wipe off the excess. Then buff it with a towel or shop rag. Has a nice feel when it is done and brings out the color of the wood.

  •  I've been using Briwax Original ( http://www.briwax.com/ ) It makes a nice finish, comes in various colors and if you don't like it or make a mistake, it strips off fairly easily.

  • I have been using Homer Formbys tung oil finish. Its not real tung oil but its easy to put on and I like the feel of it. This is just on the necks, the box's are done as far as I'm concerned.

  • Tung. Oil. Super. Glue. Rub. Rub. Rub. Repeat.
