Humbuckers Help!

Hey Folks!

I need some serious help! My pickup experience is very limited. I usually use piezos, pots, jacks and volume knobs. A guy brought me double Humbuckers out of a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top that was his fathers.  He wants them in a CBG.  No problem right? Any body have a simple diagram? The pickups only have one wire coming out of them. Test wired them and they seem to work fine. Just need a diagram.  I know I need a jack, a pot the pickups but do I need a switch? How far apart should these things be? Do I need a tone. What do I need. A simple picture with some explanation would be great! .I don't know much about Bucking Hums so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

David

  • Hey Folks

Thanks for the replies.  I have the pickup wired and have checked the wiring several times.  Everything looks good.  Is there a way to test the pickup before I put it in the guitar? Something seems kinda funny.

    Thanks,

    David

  • The "one" wire is actually two. The outside metal braid is the ground wire which acts as a shield. There's an inside wire which is the hot/lead wire. So on Ted's diagram, the braided part is the black wire and the inside part is the red wire.

For humbuckers, the pots are traditionally 500k and the capacitors are .022mf. Guitar Electronics makes a nice kit that would have everything you need: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/PK3S/Gibson-Guitar-Electro...

Guitar Electronics also has many other diagrams with two humbuckers and one volume/one tone for example - it just strikes me that with the box being smaller than a guitar, there's not going to be much room for the two pickups and a whole bunch of controls.  http://www.guitarelectronics.com/category/wiring_resources_guitar_w...

I would place the two pickups as far apart as possible. One by the neck and one by the bridge. That way you'll get the most variation in tone.

    • G'day Ted,

Im new to the CBG thing and have no idea on wiring. Im wondering if this would this be the same wiring diagrham Id use if I wanted to use one humbucker and one piezo rod? I want both to have a vol each, humbucker to have a tone, and a 3 way switch, so I can go from piezo to humbucker or have em both.

Also, Ive been told that while combining both, sometimes the sound seems out of phase, meaning that both struggle with each other instead of combining the signals.  What are your thoughts on this and if so, how can I fix it.

Any other suggestions on this set up would be greatly appreciated.

      Cheers

      Wayne
