Worship Set

Walt Haapapuro mentioned earlier this week that he would like to join the praise
band at his church with his CBG.  That is amazing!

I know God uses the peculiar to reach the lost.   Now, I am not calling Walt strange
but a CBG is a truly unique instrument.  It can break down walls and build bridges
like no other.

I am not sure if this is the proper place to open this discussion but I wanted to chat
about worship songs on the CBG.  What do you play?  What works/what doesn't...

Being a renegade Southern Baptist, I am partial to the hymns: Amazing Grace, Victory
In Jesus, I'll Fly Away, I Saw The Light...  Songs like that.  I add a G7 here and there and
they turn into nasty blues hymns.

I was talking to a pastor friend of mine.  He is well read on the latest trends in churches.
He said there is a big movement in bluegrass type worship which lends itself to the CBG.

Contemporary artists like (David) Crowder have a hillbilly flavor to them.  "My Beloved" by
Crowder is one of my favorites and sounds great on a 3 string!

I am not part of a worship team.  I am, however, a regular at a local coffee shop open mic
night.  God has provided a cool venue for me to share these songs with an ever changing
audience.  It's a lot of fun and I feel His pleasure when His is glorified.

I am convinced the God can use servants like me and Walt, armed with a box, a stick and
three strings, to move the world closer to Him!

What worship songs are you playing?

  • I just saw Crowder, and never knew he played a CBG!  I searched on Google about it, which lead me to good ol' Cigar Box Nation. I didn't know this group existed, but I'm sure glad it does!  Praise God!  I'm working on Good Good Father, myself.

    • Very cool!

I have the music for Good, Good Father but I haven't tried playing it yet.  ;)

  • I am working on "The Nazarene" by Michael Card.  Sounds pretty good (until I start singing)>

    ;)

  • Just curious.... Is there anyplace to find CBG tab/chords for some of these Christian tunes? (Besides Amazing Grace...O)

  • This is a pretty cool post!

  • Saw Crowder in concert recently and he plays 2 CBG's during the concert. I believe they are also on his new Prodicgal (?) album.

    • Nice!  I saw him at a Colorado Rockies game this summer but he didn't have a CBG.

      Crowder is really good!

  • Alan, I'm happy to be peculiar in my own unique fashion :-) Our church made it through the great Hymn vs. contemporary music schism and we do a blend of each for each service. I'm blessed to be in a smaller church where my Wife and I were married and folks know us. I'll have a very welcoming environment to start public demonstration of my chops; you know, when ever it is that I get there...

    • Battle Creek is a long walk from Colorado.  Otherwise I might come visit your church.  I am currently between churches.  ;)

As long as you remember Who you are playing for, you'll be all right!
