ok,i've read somewhere on cbn about fitting a mag pup inside the lid on the tin,my question is-does it need to be under the strings or is anywhere as effective, the bracing i fitted won't let me place the pup near the strings.
i can't re-locate the braces as i used evostik and getting them off is bound to warp the lid...

Place it just ahead of the bridge. Perpendicular to the strings is best but I haven't found that it makes a huge difference. I have tried mag pups and humbuckers under the lid on tins, but not attached TO the lid. If the can is ferrous, that would sort of turn the whole thing into a giant pickup and it will sound feedbacky and muddy. I have embedded single coils & buckers in a slot routed into the neck just ahead of the bridge position. I have even strapped them right to the neck with zip ties, leaving about 1/8" between the top of the pickup and the underside of the lid. Both methods delivered mixed results, at least with the film can canjos I have been building. Though I have yet to try it, maybe the best bet for using a pup under the lid of a tin is to add a pickup extender. Just a piece of angle iron or a small bracket attached across the poles of the pickup, then bring the other end of the angle iron/bracket up through a slot cut in the lid (under the strings.) I'm trying this method on the next pair I put together.
cheers,i'll look out for your posts on the new ones....For now I'm making a piezo bridge for this one, thanks for your reply
