  • Keep an eye on sites like gum tree and it's like, demolition lots, hardwood flooring etc.I'm in Perth, and just about every old shed being demolished is good seasoned jarrah, the sizes for necks, are usually cheap or free,i recently got around 40 metres of 100x50 for a bottle of rum,a few nails etc,but cleans up nice

    • Darryl,
Dunno what Perth is like for H&S but NSW is bloody hopeless - the slightest sniff of an old building like a shed or garage coming down they're all over it like a rash. The house across the street had a garage that was being demolished to make way for a granny flat and I spoke to the owner and he told me straight I could have the lot if it was up to him but H&S were in charge so no one can go near it while it's being pulled down because of the possibility of asbestos so all panels and timber etc had to be professionally wrapped and sealed.
I can accept the roofing and panelling but the timber? The nanny state strikes again.

    • Idon't think Bunnings carry jarrah in N S W,but pretty sure they'll have Tassie oak or similar, have a look at timber flooring also,[not laminate],glue a couple of 19 mm strips of that side by side and you are away

    • 19mm Tassie Oak they have Darryl, picked up a 1.8m length and a 1.2 at 90mm wide - got enough for three necks once they're cut in half and glued to make 45x38. I think one was 10 bux the other 16 - couldn't make up my mind which one so I bought both.
I hope now to have the 'Ned' CBG finished today now the sun's out.

  • Hi, I am a member of men's shed Mareeba fnq (Table lands).and also a keen maker and builder of the beloved CBG.I have personal timber. And Mens shed here or there would like to help membership is inexpensive. And you're will definitely make some friends and perhaps some, converts let us know sizes Regards Greg
    • Hi Greg,

There's a Men's Shed listed as being right near me, so as soon as I get a spare hour I'll suss it out, I could in all honesty do with learning more skills when it comes to timber work, it's a great way to release the tension of hours in a studio listening (or pretending to atleast) idiot engineers who think they know more about something I've composed than I do.

      Cheers..

  • Hi Carl...I get some supplies from Bunnings, some of their hardwood is not eucalypt, it is oak..(but the gum is pretty good as long as you watch out for the fingered joined timber) I also get some surprises from "mens sheds".some  Also find it usefull to laminate some of my necks because  of the sizes at hand..I am in Melbourne. We do have some suppliers closer by, but very expensive. Best of luck....and a very happy cigar boxing time over Christmas.

    • Hi Carl, as stringybark says but I went through the rack and pulled out all the quarter sawn oak for the necks. The guitars I recently built out of pine fencing boards sound surprisingly good. I can't bring myself to use my good tone woods for CBG's. I use a lot of NGR too, much better tone. Have a good one. Cheers Taff
