Hopefully we will get Lowe and others to participate here.
I'll kick off a question. Recently I saw 8" cymbals on sale and wondered how they would work as a resonator. Anyone done this and have any input as to mounting and sound qualities?

- Hi Mark.
I think Resonator CBGs is a little too advanced for the intended audience of this group. But, if there is no other group on CBN, then maybe we can host resonators as a sub-group of this one (in the manner that The Canjo Consortium group handles different forms of can based instruments). I think, however, a Resonators-101 group might be a good specialty group that could stand on its own if we could find some one to manage the group.
As far as mounting cymbals as resonators, I have no experience. But, it sounds just like the kind of wacky (great) idea that could just work given all the creativity that the members of CBN have. If nothing else, you can make your CBG into a Stumf fiddle with a couple of cymbals and a host of other noise makers.
Ask Old Lowe. I think he's the King of Resonator CBGs how he would mount a cymbal (or two?) in a CBG.
In the mean time I'll check out the list of groups to make sure there is not already a Resonator CBG group.

- Okay. I didn't see any groups on CBN dedicated to Resonator CBGs, and I have realized that I brought this problem on myself by using the "R" word in the name of this group "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101". So, I'll host a resonator discussion area as a part of this group, even though it's more of an advanced topic. I was originally planning just to talk about basic box building. But, resonator CBGs have always fascinated me since I first set eyes upon one.

- All right, "my bad" as my sons might say. I did indeed misunderstand.
You want to discuss building your own boxes, ok. Imagine my confusion! Over the weekend I was thinking the nation is missing two important groups, one dedicated to four stringers. Playing, tabs, tips etc. The other resonators. I saw your new group and thought..... finally!
There is a lot of resonator building information scattered about the place, I was just hoping to centralize the theme and topic for discussion, ideas and tips on resonator construction.
Dont feel pressured to host a resonator group because of my misunderstanding, unless you really want to. Maybe we can get someone knowledgeable on this to start one. (Not that your not, I dont know!)
In the meantime, maybe we can get the title of this group modified.... LOL!
OK, Ill shutup, but next time I have a box joint jig set up on my router table I'll take some pics and submit them for this group.

- These are all boxes I have made using Lowe cones. If you check my page you will find even more. I have done 10 boxes with Lowe cones.

I found a CBN discussion group dedicated to metal resonator CBGs called How Loud Can We Make It.
They have been around longer than this group and so should have much more information.

I had forgotten about that group Rand, thanks for reminding me. And thank you for your kind tolerance of my mistake and misunderstanding of the intent of your group here. Sorry about that chief!

- If you want to see some really interesting Reso-CBG designs, check out what bairfoot cajun has done. He has many non-traditional resonator designs as well as traditional ones. Check out both his photos and videos.

- Here is an off-CBN link to an article about Resonator Guitars that some may find interesting.
