My CATBRO Resonator

I realized I posted this in another discussion on piezos.  Sorry for that.

I am building a resonator guitar for my neighbour from a cedar box that had salmon in it (and a painting of a salmon), an old guitar neck and a cat food bowl.....hence the catbro.

 Pics to date below:

Electronics in.

Put some stain on it tonight and hot glued the wires in place.  Should be able to put the back on tomorrow and then get the bridge and the nut on.  Hope you like it.

  • Hi Tom Walters,

I finally noticed the hole cutter you used to cut the hole for your cat bowl resonator "cone". Can you tell us more about it? I have to resort to pretty primitive (and clumsy) means to cut such large holes (so I rarely do it). It would be nice it there was an easy and safe way to do it w/o spending big bucks. Tell us how it works.

  • Thanks for posting the pics!  Neat recycling of the salmon box and the final product looks great!

  • Order 99,  I did put a piece of 1/4 plywood under the dish and two cross braces for support - one on the end and one in the middle.  I drilled holes through the middle brace so sound could come out to the soundholes.

The build is done.  Here is my son holding the finished product.  Corian for the nut and bridge.

Now I will try and post a video of my son playing it.  Never done this before.

  • That is one drop dead gorgeous build-i'll bet it plays as good as it looks when you're done!

Quick question if I may-did you need any reinforcement of the box for the cat dish or was the soundboard sturdy enough to just epoxy it in? Do you forsee any trusses in the Catbro's future?
  • Here's an update.....put on the back and sprayed on some finish.
