I thought of starting an online petition, regarding the repurposing practices in the DIY/craft community. I follow several CBG Facebook pages and groups. Once in a while, someone posts a pic of a Jack Daniels tin guitar. Someone usually brings up copyright laws and letters that folks have recieved about this. If there's anyone who haas experience writing online petitions, that go to Washington, after a certain deadline, let me know. If anyone is interested in this, let me know. We can all work together to fix copyright laws. Thanks.

I'm thinkin' that if you made 500 JD/Harley/yadda-yadda gist the primary manufacturers might have an issue.....however, I don't think that anyone's gonna chase down guys like us who make and mebbe sell a couple of bits with a logo on....on the other hand, I recall a couple of peeps getting sued over the Napster thang so.......just my 2c worth.....anyhow, I'm gonna luff my ass off when Pick gets sued by Ferrari........
If you post anything for sale online and describe it using a registered TM ("Harley Davidson rice cooker" "Jack Daniels coffee mug" etc.), it will be picked up by Google search and will come to the attention of the TM owner who, as somebody here pointed out, has sold that marketing to somebody in Beijing and is now legally obligated to send you a C & D letter. Don't believe me--put a "Kim Kardashian Kapo" ad on Ebay and watch what happens.
Hard to feel sorry for the suits, but they've already agreed in writing to shoot at you if you stick your head up.
Call it a "Cigar Box Guitar" but don't say "Punch Cigar"--just show a photo and copy Ben's words about "upcycled trash."
There is a lot of good advice in this thread. Eric, Pick, Kid and others nail it on the head. My view on it is that I'm gonna keep making instruments out of upcycled trash (packaging materials whose original use has been fully exhausted, like cigar boxes, oil cans, etc) and stay away from commercially licensed stuff. If I get a Cease and Desist over this, I'll fight it with every resource I have.
another thing to consider when writting petitions ..:
A stoner grows pot in his back yard because he figures it should be legal , starts a petition , , stoner now gets raided and busted every week . and monitored ( along with all his contacts / websites on the petition he supplied) .
