I am curious what is the advantage to using the tailpiece through the body to mount the strings on the end? To me it seems it makes more sense to just extend the strings through the body right on the other side of the bridge / saddle in order to get a steeper break? What is the advantage of going 'through the body' over not?

i made a couple of early builds with body string through and neck through, for me the "neck tail end through" method sounded much better and produced better sustain, and i haven't made a string through one since, though a "tail-end" hinged arrangement can also work well, try it and see (-:
I'm curious about this too because I don't really care for the look of the neck-through. But . . if it improves the sound.
