I am fitting out a short scale (17") CBG using phosphor bronze strings from Gitty, gauges 0.44., 034, .026. (GDg). I seem to have excessive tension and cannot tune to the correct note using a chromatic tuner. Maybe I am an octave to high?

44, 34 and 26 are very thick strings for GDg, try 32, 24 and 16 they'll tune up much easier, ordinary electric guitar strings will be fine (-:
all fixed, Thanks
Sweet!
You might be tuning it too high. Those are essentially the same gauges I use, and have no problems getting to GDg.
You are Wright. I was too high. They must be good strings (Gitty) as I had a hell of a lot of tension on them. The Uke. tuners stood up very well
