Now that I know more about how acoustic instruments work, I'm re-evaluating some of my earlier builds. When I started, I really liked the look of resonator soundhole covers, and ]delighted in re-purposing hardware store items into low-rent versions. But as I look at my builds with large drain covers and other heavy metal pieces glued to the part of the guitar that should be vibrating freely, I find myself wondering if my efforts toward prettiness might be deadening the sound. Anyone ever investigated this? (Obviously, this question applies more to acoustic CBGs than electric brethren.)

  • I believe they will change the acoustic sound some. I had one I built as just acoustic, no frills f holes sounded great. then i added a very large piezo inside the lid. stuck it down with double stick tape and put some foam on the back.  It was about 1.5" diameter, it killed the acoustic sound. So in my case adding a little bling to the top can effect sound, enough to make me change the piezo.  But don't worry about what is done, each one is a whole new project.
