I need more support on the 1/4 jack but if I add wood or something to either a canjo type or wooden cigar box the threads won't go through.. Also seems like the nut comes loose often on the jack. I saw somewhere on this site there are longer threads for 1/4 jacks..currently using the radio shack 255 types... Any other ideas for reinforcement for my existing jacks. On the cigar box type afraid to overtighten the nut on the jack as it might split the wood or indent to the extreme or even break the wood supporting the jack itself. On the cookie tIn types i havent tried adding wood yet.. thank you.

  • As  for the nut coming loose, try a dab of clear nail polish on the threads where the nut is. Holds great but not too strong in case you even need to remove the jack.

  • John,

With short necked jacks, I often use a fostner bit to "thin" the wood to the extent that a plate washer with a hole large enough for the jack's neck can be used in the hole as a "plate".  A little wood and a metal washer gives a very strong attachement.  Additionally, if you use a chrome, stainless or brass washer, it can dress up your CBG.

  • I used a jack plate on both of my tin bodied guitars. Worked a treat.

  • look at C.B. Gitty Supply they have the longer threaded jacks. i think they call them nuetrik or something like that. No points for spelling here.

  • You can take a thin piece of metal, put a round hole in it for the jack, cut a hole in the box, reinforce the hole with wood strips, and screw the metal plate over it. In other words, make a jack cover plate.
