On one of the plans given here, it suggests sandwiching the piezo between two thin pieces of wood. What does this do? Sorry if this has been covered before.

Some [like me and tiny guitars] put a glob of hot glue down and stick it... the piezo that is... to the glue. Careful. Hot glue has that name for a reason [ever put melted cheese in your mouth off a pizza?]
I put mine between wood and put it on the outside of the box, then i put my bridge piece ( brass rod, threaded bolt, key or whatever) on top of this. It makes a great pickup with less feedback and is very reponsive.
Ben saves the day! Good post Ben. I like foam to deaden the harshness. But that's just me.

Quick! I'll save you from the snarky remarks! (Its been covered before) It deadens it a bit. Some people like wood, some like silicone, some like Shoe Goo, some like hot glue, some like leather, some like styrofoam, some like a combination of some or all of the above. The main thing is that piezos are generally extremely responsive and harsh. These methods all help tame them (and feedback) a bit.
