this is my first time building a CBG, thinking about a oak neck with glued on fretboard rising slightly above the box, would like to use the face of my box "the lid', for the top. does the neck inside the box need to be glued or nailed to the lid or should the neck piece inside the box fill the space inside the box between top an bottom. don't know if I'll be able to open my lid if the fretboard is rising above it. are some cbg made not to open after completion.

Hi Ty,
Have a look also at the CAD drawings produced by Wes Yates (CBG member)
here. You will see on one of these a further recess so that the through the body neck is kept clear of the lid so that it has the opportunity to resonate. I glue the neck to the box lid (at each end) so that to open the box you take off the neck and lid complete with strings. That way you don't have to unstring to go inside the box.
This photograph of one of my builds shows the second recess in the neck.

I put a small glue block in the front of my box and the neck gets screwed to this and screwed from the back. Check out my page for pics. I don't glue the lid down, the string pressure holds it just fine. My neck is flush with the top but the next 2 i am making are raised up a bit. Works both ways. If you keep the neck from touching the top and bottom across most of the neck the accustic sound will be better, or so i am told. Good luck and have fun with it.
On the CBGs I've built I've routed out the thickness of the lid from the top of the neck so that it is flush with the underside of the lid. That way the top of the neck is flush with the top of the box. When I attach the fret board it than raises above the top of the box. My necks so far have been through body necks. I've made the cut in the body where the neck goes a snug cut so that I don't have to glue or attach the neck to the body in any way. Just friction. I can than open all of my tops. I've post some pictures of my builds if you're interested.
