  • I was looking for a good hard material for the nut and the bridge -- like a hardwood -- when I heard that some big guitar manufacturer uses bone. Well, my dog chews on bone regularly -- so I took one of his. I cut it, filed it and sanded it. It works great. Though it smells like a dentist drilling when you saw it. So one answer to the question of a good source for bone and nut material would have to be a dog, butcher, or pet store.
  • Af for me....frets? If I want frets, I will play my real guitar....I like the idea and sound of no frets...but, if you want a cool fret wire, get some thin copper wire and glue it in.....it looks cool as all get outl, and it is cheap. I can get fret wire at my local music store, but the more I build, the less I want frets.
  • Japanese Flush Cut Saw from Harbor Freight Tools for a fret saw. Works fantastic and $ - WY
  • heres a good cheap fret saw. you may need to stiffen the blade tho. but its the correct thickness. thay can be found for about $10 or $12. http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?TYPE=PRODUCT&PARTNUMBER...
  • I just did a second rate job trying to cut fret slots with a coping saw too... no bueno. I'll definitely be tryin to find a new way of doing this, maybe thinning the blade on a mitre saw. I think that sounds like the best option so far. Although it might be cheaper to go Paul's way and keep my mitre saw unaltered.
  • Grizzly Industrial is another good company to deal with. They have a big tool catalog and have a basic selection of luthier supplies at good prices.

  • I'd show you the miter gauge I made, Simular ti Wes's but I just ordered a Japanese Fret saw from Stewart-MacDonald's store. Now I will have to modify my gauge to fit the new saw and depth gauge. My Christmas present to myself.

I have ordered many items from S-M and have been very pleased so far.
