Hi, I am working on my first build, and im getting ready to glue the neck on. I read the people only glue the neck and the two ends, and notch the rest about 1/4 in. from the face to allow it to vibrate. Is this true? I feel like this might allow the neck to bend where it is notched. By the way, Im using a poplar neck (not sure if this affects anything, but it doesnt hurt to mention it).

  • If you take the wood out of a 3/4 inch piece without any extra behind it you may get some flex, but when its mounted in the box the box will add strength to the neck were it is inside the box. Thru necks are pretty tough, until you add more strings. If its just 3 you should be ok. Look at lots of pics to see how others have done it. Mine are cut from one piece and are a bit of overkill but they don't bend.
Johnny who's ding crazy stuff?? Not in here!
  • Alex. I make a 1/8" (2mm) recess for sound. I screw the lid down on the area right under the fretboard as well there is the same area on the other end. Also note that I have extra material under that so the neck won't bend any. Its my laminated neck design. Not exclusive or uncommon.

  • I do that, but I glue and clamp a piece of wood on the back side of the neck to make up for the piece that I trimmed off, so that part of the neck is almost stronger than it was when I started.
