Good show Wes :o) Heres another idea too - not one of mine, but Juju (aka 'soundsogood') sent me this sketch when I was working with the same thoughts. Im sure he wont mind me pasting it up here.
The idea is this - just cos you have a 6 string pickup, you dont have to have a full width piece of metal poking thru the top - shape the 'blade part to suit your build. Simples :o)

  • Guys, I tried a piece of iron bar 1/8x1/2 on my electric 6 string and it doesn't hurt the sound and prolly would work just as Randy says. You know, I might not even care if the pieces stick out. Two together perpendicular sticking out of the lid (1/4x2 1/4) would not even look too bad. I could even tilt the pickup like a strat's to allow for the pickup to catch all 4 strings.... Hmmmmmm. Thoughts a'brewin'.
  • Hey, one more thought...
If you left the metal bar flush with the lid, you could even paint it to match the logo again - from anything more than a foot away it would look like there was no pickup at all!
  • Oh, I'm lovin' this. Thanks!!!

It sounds just the same to me! In essence all it does is extend the magnets.... in a lazy, easy to do way :o)

  • Guys, this is great. Whew. Not even ready to mount a pickup. I'm still working on the construction. Many days to go until I make any pickup installation. I like your solution.

So, does the steel bar act as extensions to the poles? Does this affect the pickup quality? I guess I could try with my 'lectric here at home and a piece of steel bar. I have a 1/8x1/2 piece I used for a truss rod.

Dude... dont cut that box! I think it will work, though the signal may be weak. If it is, its no hassle to thin the top a bit with the sander.
Another option is to drill just the holes and extend the poles through, so all you will see on the top is 6 little silver dots. I was going to do this but eventually went with the easier approach of mounting the pup inside the box, and cutting a slot about 5mm x distance between the 2 end poles in the lid. In this I sat a piece of steel, so all you see from outside is a thin bar... pic attached as Im sure this makes no sense!
  • Nice solution! How does it sound with the bar?

  • Hi Wes-

One suggestion is to work this out using a less precious box before you do the experiment with the harder-to-come by Cohiba box. Taping pickup to try out various locations before cutting is a very good idea.
