I recently bought 20 boxes from a company (which cost me £100 inc del), and the first two I've opened have had mold on the inside paper, like this...

First of all I'm not the complaining type, but do you think I should tell them?  Also is it possible that the mold will spread after I've build guitars out of them?  I'd hate to make one for someone and find it goes all moldy.  Is this normal in cigar boxes because it's the first time I've seen it?

Cheers

  • See if you can find some mold remover in the DIY stores.  People usually get this for spraying on lumber after water damage, etc.  Bleach won't work nearly as well as an antimicrobial spray.  Spray it on, wipe with a cloth and let it dry.  Some staining may remain.

    I'd expect better for 5GBP each.

  • A little mould and Foxing shouldn't be a problem if you remove the loose paper,  clean the area out with soapy water and let the box dry out, i have some of these old boxes - at least you know they are genuine old-timey! (-;

  • I will let them know, especially as they are targetting cigar box guitar makers to sell the boxes too.

    Each time I do a build I open the box, air it and do the neck first so should be ok there. It's very hot here just now.
  • At the risk of stating the obvious, mold is caused by overly damp conditions, so they were probably stored in a damp place. I would definitely let them know and send them a picture or two.

    I would say to leave the box opened up to the air so they can dry out. Maybe use a hair dryer to help the drying process along.

    You can wipe the inside down with some bleach water and a damp cloth first to kill the mold. You could also shake some baking soda inside to help absorb the moisture.  I would double check the integrity of the box joints to make sure the box is structurally sound, and reinforce with triangle stock as necessary.
