Some of the vintage mandolin tuners are definitely more compact - smaller post and tighter spacing. Modern ones are a bit larger than that, but generally smaller than standard acoustic tuners. I find that tuners made for electric guitars seem to be a bit larger in scale as far as posts and gears, but I could be wrong about that. Here's a vintage mandolin set, for example, on a 3-string dulcimer but with an extra melody string:

Are there any major differences between the tuners for guitars, mandolins, banjos, etc?
"They" say you should have the post part closer to the nut than the gear part so it does not strain your tuners over time. Sometimes you can disassemble the tuners and put the post/gears back together the other way so you can use the "right" handed set on the left for a second build.
Or you can just use them anyway. That's what I did.
