I have only worked with it once a while back, and as I recall it was pretty hard and rather tough to work with, or am I confusing it with some other wood?

Be aware that ipe sawdust is highly toxic, containing numerous allergens that increase, not decrease, your sensitivity with prolonged exposure. But it can be worked safely, by taking almost Hazmat-like precautions
Funny you mention Ipe. I met my wife on an organic farm in Costa Rica called Finca Ipe (Ipe Farm). Ipe is also known as Pao d'arco. It is a hard wood, and will dull your tools. But very nice when finished, and strong as an ox.

Very tough to work or machine. Weighs a ton. Good for decks but maybe not the best for necks and such
