If you want a nice twangy banjo, you might consider something like this. Simple paint can lid reso with three strings... add one or two more string and thar's that banjo you always wanted... good luck the best, Wichita Sam FatDog said:
I suffer (ed) from G.A.S (Gear Adquisition Syndrome). I have 5 guitars and the constant need to have more guitars, more gadgets, etc.
There are no banjos where I live, and one day I was listening to some bluegrass Metallica tribute. And decided I wanted a banjo. I'm dirt poor, and cannot afford the price of buying one overseas.
So I decided to build myself one to ease the GAS pain, and do some "Zen" handcrafts to also relieve some of the weekly stress.
Lurking the WWW I came here. The minute I stepped in, I knew I was saved.
Now my GAS is cured. Now I know I can have a new guitar or stringed instrument every couple of months if I want. And they are going to cost me next to nothing.
I also have found a new creativity outburst. I'm always wanting to play the "junkitar", I actually play it more than any of my other guitars at home.
I'm writting new stuff, learning slide, bluegrass, etc..

but these guys not only find it.. they find it in 60 dollar homemade instruments and not 2000 (dollar) store bought egos.

im so looking forward to that moment. ive played guitar for 25 or so years and have never thought i could make my own. i never really gave much thought either to the fact you dont need 6 strings. i have been watching various videos of players using everything from 1 to 6 strings. it blows my mind as to what these great musicians can do with so little.to build your own guitar creates personal style. which many 6 stringers seek their entire playing careers and never find. but these guys not only find it.. they find it in 60 dollar homemade instruments and not 2000 dollar store bought egos.

Hey, welcome! I also got started by using Bill video and I recommend it to every newcomer I can. He makes it all so easy looking and really answered a lot of questions for me. I probably watched it 6 times before I actually started my first guitar. Keep the first one very basic and simple and see what a thrill it is when you string it up and it actually sounds like a guitar. Your are going to love it.

Jim, welcome aboard and congrats on the video. Bill's vid is what got me started and I've been eeking out a living building instruments for over a year now! The video is very well done and Bill is an excellant teacher and breaks things down in very simple terms and sections and often makes you think, "why didn't I think of that!?!?!" You will enjoy the video as well as all the resources here on the nation. Please check out the videos by Jim Farris on veoh.com as well! Most of all, may God bless you! jay
