After watching the new video posted by Flatfoot Johnny http://www.cigarboxnation.com/video/fishin-blues I figured it was time to learn to play the banjo, but have to make one first.
Here is a link to a PDF with some really detailed instructions on how to make a gourd banjo. The neck shaping and neck angle parts are especially helpful if you want to move beyond a stick from the Home Depot. Of course you don't need a gourd, Johnny used a tin and nylon strings which was a very sweet sounding combination - and my plan now, too.

And if you don't have a banjo handy, here are some printable plans for your basic measurements, if you want to be all standard about it.

But the link is also on the banjohangout page above and the link works there. At least it did for me. Worth the clicking for the really good illustrations - especially about two-profile cutting.
Diane, great post, but for some reason I can't get the address to the making pdf to work. I'll keep trying. I'm really interested in this gourd stuff because I raised some gourds a few years ago. I still have a few around fact just four nights ago I picked one up that has been banging around my shop and cut it just to see the results. I not sure yet what I will try to make from it but it will be a small guitar, dulcimer etc. It is shiny inside because I put a finish on it.

Your link had '...' in the middle. The main link for the workshop is http://www.dhyatt.com/craft_workshop.html. The PDF link is http://www.dhyatt.com/craft_workshop/gourd_banjo_making.pdf.
