I had a part of an old oak table top that was a genuine barn find.  I cut it down 20 years ago to make a coffee table and now the rest has been ripped into 5 maybe 6 necks.

Area hogged out for top;  Next is same for slotted headpiece w/tuners

I was planning on using this old cheap pbass pickup but it is almost 3/4 tall.  I would need to cut through the neck at least 1/2 inch.  I might do that and add a reinforcement. I have got about a 8 inch piece of 3/4 stock from this same piece of wood.

And the basics fit together(although I think I will flip the neck around the other way):

  • Wow, that turned out great. I put bar soap on the screws when going into hard wood. Seems to help keep them from breaking too easily.

    • I am really happy with the half of a pbass pickup.    Someone included it when i bought a bass body off of ebay, it is a no namer but as it is half it is a basic single coil pickup that seems to put out a clean single that adapts pretty well.  String spacing is not perfect but seems like you could use one for 3 or 4 sting builds just fine.

  • Looks good!

  • Always remember......they aren't flaws. They are features.
  • well I got to the store and they did not have those so I ended up with these, hope they are not too heavy.  Not being a guitar player I am not sure what that would do anyways.

    • Well finally got a few minutes.  Nut and bridge are on and the pickup has been set at a depth that looks good. I strung her up to test things before I finalize the wiring.  The angle2012-02-18_12-42-19_788.jpg for the compensated bridge was a complete guess but it is almost perfect intonation is almost dead on.

      • Nice! It turned out good.

  • and I assume if I want to go to DAD I just use strings 4,5,6 which would be 30,42 and 54 on this set.

  • Going to go buy a set of strings.  My scale is around 24-24.5 and I expect to tune to GDG.  I am looking at a set of Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky 3,4,5 are 22,30,42.  I figure with a little shorter than guitar scale and the detuning of the A string will need heavier strings correct?

  • Looking good. The neck reinforcement should work just fine. I hate when those brass screws twist off, its the old hard oak.
