Does anyone have a favorite or recommended tuning to use when jamming just a guitar and drums?

So far I've been using

CGC

DGBD

ADF#

The first or any variation of it is fun to use and can easily be followed by drums

The second two i've found good for strumming

What have you guys enjoyed using?

  • G+D+G+B+ for just about everything these days...my voice dictates it ...(-;

    drums are not so fussy!

  • Hello Cris,

    Please consider my instructional video CD 6. I teach a method of movable chords that functions very similar to a standard 6 string guitar. Using GDg tuning (CD 4), I retune to ADf# tuning. If you use a guitar fake book that contains the chords to your favorite songs, you will have no problem finding the chords you need. Enjoy jammin', Keni Lee

  • Cris,

    Any tuning will work, unless your drummer is really into tunable drums.  If he can tune his kick,  and / or has a tunable deep tom, I like to have them tune them to A or D. Also, if your drummer is experienced, listen to his cymbal playing, especially his ride and hi hat work; those freqs cut through better than the kick or tom in full band situations. If it's just the two of you, then you both just need to figure out where "the one" beat is, and sync up. Good eye communication and time spent playing together can help that.

    I'm currently using Open G (G-D-G-b), and a weird Bb tuning used in my recent initial vid (Bb-F-Bb-d).
