I got some bamboo scants, and wondering if anyone has used bamboo for necks, fingerboards, etc.
I will need to run it through my planer, and I read somewhere that you also need to pay particular attention to the direction of the grain, otherwise it rips easily?

If you can get the thickness of your oak and maple necks Dan, it's certainly strong enough, probably stronger than both tensile wise, as for machining i have no idea, but high speed and light cuts should get you there
I've never used it for a neck or fingerboard but I did make a banjo using a round bamboo vegetable steamer. It did seem to shred/splinter pretty easily when I cut it. I've made flutes with bamboo too but with them all that's needed is to drill holes in the right place. Please keep us updated on how you fare.
The Yumi (Japanese Archery Bow) is made of 3 laminated layers of bamboo and a well made one has no issues with splitting/ripping. Some hardwood flooring is made from Bamboo and folks seem to like its durability and looks.
